1. GLOBAL SOCIAL POLICY VOLUME 1 NUMBER 2 now available.

The second issue of this new international journal of social development and public policy is now available from SAGE. Articles include Ian Gough on Globalisation and Regional Welfare Regimes, Ethan Kapstein and Branko Milanovic on Responding to Globalisation: Social Policy in Emerging Market Economies and Huck-Ju Kwon on Globalisation, Unemployment and Policy Responses in Korea.

2. GSP DIGEST FOR VOLUME 1 NUMBER 3 already on web.

In keeping with our policy of providing a fast and comprehensive coverage of news and developments in global social policy the DIGEST for issue 1.3 which will be published in hard copy in December 2001 is already available on the GASPP web site. This edition of the digest covers the period May to August 2001 and includes developments in international social policy (social security, education, health, human settlements, social development, gender and human rights), global governance, and the social policy implications of other global policies such as trade and financing.

3. REPORT ON THE ROLE OF CONSULTING COMPANIES IN THE ACCESSION OF EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES TO THE EU.

A project funded by the Finnish Foreign Ministry and undertaken by GASPP researcher Caroline de la Porte has been completed. It is critical of the technical assistance mechanism (PHARE) used by the EU to advise Eastern European Countries about EU thinking and practice in social policy.

4. REPORT ON THE SOCIAL DIMENSION OF REGIONALISM: A CONSTRUCTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO NEO-LIBERAL GLOBALISATION?

A project funded by UKFDID and undertaken by GASPP researcher Bob Deacon has also been completed. It surveys the extent to which three regional groupings of countries (MERCOSUR, SADC, ASEAN) are developing a regional approach to social policy and concludes that to the extent to which they are this could herald a constructive alternative to neo-liberal globalisation.

5.GASPP 5th SEMINAR CALL FOR PAPERS OPEN.

The fifth GASPP seminar will take place on September 26th to 28th 2002 in Dubrovnik in association with the ILO-SES Programme and the WHO. The theme is the Emerging Global Market in Social Protection and Health: Implications for Socio-Economic Security.
